The Australian business lending landscape has witnessed significant growth, with the total lending to non-financial businesses reaching $1.2 trillion as of January 2026.
This marks a 9.3% increase over the year and a substantial 53.9% rise compared to January 2020, according to the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA).

National Australia Bank (NAB) continues to lead this burgeoning market, holding a loan book valued at $261.1 billion in January. This represents a 0.2% increase over the month and an 11.6% growth over the year. NAB's market share stands at 21.8%, underscoring its dominant position in the business lending sector.

Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA) follows closely, reporting $230.8 billion in business lending, with a 0.9% month-on-month increase and a 12.0% year-on-year growth. CBA's market share has risen to 19.1%, reflecting its strategic focus on expanding its business lending portfolio.

These figures highlight a robust and competitive business lending environment in Australia. For businesses seeking financing, this growth translates into more opportunities and potentially more favourable lending conditions. However, it's crucial for business owners to carefully assess their financing options, considering factors such as interest rates, loan terms, and the specific needs of their enterprises.

In this dynamic market, staying informed about the latest developments and understanding the offerings of various lenders can empower businesses to make strategic decisions that align with their growth objectives.

The Reserve Bank’s latest financial aggregates add another chapter to the borrowing story that has been building through 2026. The July update indicates that private sector credit is still expanding, with business lending remaining an important source of momentum. For SMEs, sole traders and self-employed borrowers, this extends the pattern seen in the earlier June credit data: demand for funding has not disappeared, even while interest rates and lender scrutiny continue to shape approval outcomes. - read more

26 Aug 2026: Paige Estritori
The Reserve Bank’s latest meeting minutes have added more detail to the message borrowers heard after the earlier August rate decision: policy makers are not yet ready to declare victory over inflation, even if some parts of the economy are clearly slowing. For households, sole traders and SMEs, that means borrowing plans still need to be built around current lending conditions rather than expectations of a quick fall in rates. - read more

What the August RBA Decision Means for Borrowers
19 Aug 2026: Paige Estritori
The Reserve Bank of Australia’s August decision to leave the cash rate unchanged at 4.35% keeps a familiar message in place for Australian borrowers: relief may come eventually, but loan decisions still need to be made on today’s numbers. For households, sole traders and SMEs, the practical issue is not only where rates sit now, but how lenders assess affordability while policy remains restrictive. - read more

Why June Credit Trends Matter for Business Borrowers
12 Aug 2026: Paige Estritori
The latest Reserve Bank financial aggregates extend a pattern that has been building for several months: Australian businesses are still leaning on credit, even while borrowing costs remain elevated and lenders continue to scrutinise applications closely. Private sector credit continued to grow over the month and across the year, with business lending again a key contributor to overall momentum. - read more
What APRA’s 3% Buffer Means for Borrowing Power
What APRA’s 3% Buffer Means for Borrowing Power
23 Jul 2026: Paige Estritori
APRA’s decision to keep the mortgage serviceability buffer at 3 percentage points is a timely reminder that loan approval is still being judged on resilience, not just today’s advertised interest rate. The buffer requires regulated lenders to test whether borrowers could still manage repayments if rates were materially higher than the loan rate being offered. - read more
