The Reserve Bank of Australia’s August decision to leave the cash rate unchanged at 4.35% keeps a familiar message in place for Australian borrowers: relief may come eventually, but loan decisions still need to be made on today’s numbers.
For households, sole traders and SMEs, the practical issue is not only where rates sit now, but how lenders assess affordability while policy remains restrictive.

This latest hold extends the pattern that has shaped much of 2026. Inflation has eased from its peak, yet the RBA remains cautious about declaring the job done. That means borrowers should be wary of building a loan application around the assumption that rate cuts are imminent. Even if market pricing shifts, lenders will continue to test income, expenses, existing debts and repayment resilience carefully.

For personal loan applicants, the unchanged cash rate reinforces the need to look beyond the advertised rate. Fees, comparison rates, early repayment conditions and loan terms can all change the total cost. A slightly lower rate may not be the better outcome if the loan carries higher establishment costs or a term that stretches repayments for longer than necessary.

For business owners, the decision is another reminder to match finance structure with purpose. Working capital, vehicle finance, equipment purchases and expansion funding all place different pressure on cash flow. Before applying, it is worth mapping how repayments would sit against seasonal revenue, tax obligations, supplier costs and wage commitments. Using realistic assumptions to estimate repayments can help identify whether a proposed facility is comfortable or too tight.

The hold also matters for loan eligibility. Lenders are still likely to favour clean bank conduct, well-documented income, manageable existing debt and a clear explanation of how funds will be used. Self-employed borrowers and SMEs may need to provide more detailed financials, including tax returns, BAS, profit and loss statements and recent bank records. Preparing these documents early can reduce delays and improve the quality of an application.

In this environment, borrowers should avoid treating finance as a simple rate-shopping exercise. The stronger approach is to compare finance options across lenders, assess total repayment cost and consider whether the loan remains manageable if income softens or costs rise. The RBA’s August hold does not close the door on future easing, but it does keep the focus firmly on disciplined borrowing, clear documentation and repayment buffers.

The Reserve Bank’s latest meeting minutes have added more detail to the message borrowers heard after the earlier August rate decision: policy makers are not yet ready to declare victory over inflation, even if some parts of the economy are clearly slowing. For households, sole traders and SMEs, that means borrowing plans still need to be built around current lending conditions rather than expectations of a quick fall in rates. - read more
